Liz Brasher "Cold Baby"

It has been quite the week, as WMOT commemorated the moment it first signed on the air 50 years ago with a live broadcast. Liz Brasher was on hand. AJ Croce joined us, as did Adam Wakefield and his amazing band. Look for video from Adam here at Music Fog before too long. I like to reminisce about milestones like this. What was happening in music in 1969 was nothing short of the tectonic plates shifting. Take Woodstock and Altamont, for instance, they were miles apart and stark opposites in just a few short months. Woodstock is about to celebrate its 50th, and today’s Music Fog video comes from Liz Brasher, who has been asked to perform at Woodstock.

Liz is an amazing creature; big powerful voice, bad ass guitar slinger, band leader extraordinaire, and quite the music historian as well. Her travels have taken her from North Carolina, to Chicago, to now making her home in Memphis. Today’s song was written in Chicago, in the chill of winter, but she takes that somewhere else with “Cold Baby.” Here is the Music Fog video of NPR Music Slingshot artist Liz Brasher.

Becky Warren "We're All We Got"

What were you doing in 1969? My radio station, WMOT, was signing on for the very first time. It happened on April 9th at 5pm, and we are celebrating the moment with an event at that very time. Liz Brasher, AJ Croce and Adam Wakefield will be joining us to bring the tunes and WMOT will be broadcasting live, plus providing a live video feed on NPR Music/VuHaus. 1969 was just a bit before I got into radio, but FM was already a focus for me. The music was hypnotic. It was also a cultural beacon, bringing us together to protest, and soothing our souls. It was an important voice in our lives. Of course, we Foggers still think it is.

Today’s video is from the courageous Becky Warren, who writes from a very 60’s perspective, putting danger aside to get the story. Her last album was centered in the stories of returning soldiers. The new album, Undesirable, was written from the perspective of the folks selling newspapers on the corners of Nashville streets. Becky hung out with them to gain their trust and hear their stories. It begat songs that are deep and rich. Check this out and see if it doesn’t resonate. We know these folks...we see them every day. Joe Robinson "Mindless"

We have been asked so many times, “What does Music Fog mean?” We describe it as the present time moment when you are so engrossed in the music, that everything else fades away. It happens all the time at the best shows, when the music centers you and takes you away. Love that. I am ever in search of those moments, and we sure do love to create them at Music Fog, and share them with you.

Today’s video is from Joe Robinson, whom we first encountered three years ago in our Guitar Army shoot with Robben Ford and Lee Roy Parnell. He blew us away, and we have been anxiously awaiting new music from him. Undertones has just hit the street, and it’s chock full of introspective tunes and seriously amazing guitar playing. We invited Joe to perform again for our cameras, and he brought us the tune ”Mindless,” which has a fog, or clarity, moment of its own. Look for Joe’s new album Undertones, but in the meantime, enjoy the Music Fog recording of “Mindless.”
