The Trishas "Why"

I want to take a look back at The Trishas, who were founded at the same time as Music Fog was. It was a shiny new year, in 2009, and we were all in the snow at Steamboat, happy to be toasting to a new beginning. There was a flurry of excitement when the girls stepped out to perform that first time. Since then, they have graced stages everywhere and have been the opening act for some heavy hitters. During Ray Wylie Hubbard’s Grit N’ Groove in April, they sang back up for Joe Walsh. The Trishas are headlining tonight in Dallas, and they play with Joe Ely at Floore’s Country Store on Friday. They take to the road, heading West a bit, and then east to destinations in the South.

One thing is for sure, they wow audiences wherever they go. Paul Thorn watched them from the soundboard at Antone’s several months back, and said, “I’m going to be opening for them one day.” The Trishas bring power and grace in their harmonies. It is a wonder to watch how they weave their four distinct personalities and voices into such a cohesive force. It is so effortless that they seem to float. They make you float while watching, which might be the best part. This is cathartic, emotional, transcendent. We Music Foggers feel honored to continue to be their unofficial videographers. We captured this performance at MusicFest in Steamboat Springs, in the Grand Hotel in January. It is another unreleased tune called “Why.”

Micky Braun "Long and Lonely Highway"

Every year about this time, I wonder why I didn’t make plans to attend the Braun Brothers Reunion in Challis, Idaho. IDAHO...that sounds beautiful right about now. A couple of days ago, when I saw Cody Braun from Reckless Kelly, he said it is an adventure just getting there. It is even a four hour drive from Boise, which makes it something you have to plan well in advance. But for those that do, a splendid time will be had by all. The lineup is totally kick ass, among them Greencards, Rodney Crowell, Robert Earl Keen, Wade Bowen, Randy Rogers, Walt & Tina Wilkins, Cody Canada & The Departed, and of course Reckless Kelly and Micky & The Motorcars. It just gets better and better every year.

Jason Eady "Paid My Dues"

Can I say...that I don’t care who you are, I don’t care what you been. This is starting off like the Memphis Slim blues tune “Mother Earth,” which is required listening, by the way. I like Eric Burdon and War’s version of it too. The truth of it is for as long as you live, there are checks and balances. There is always something new to learn, and there are always reasons to be humble. And if you forget this, or somehow think you can rise above it, trust me, something will make you remember you are no better than the next. Or as Bob Dylan wisely wrote, “To live outside the law you must be honest.” We are all in this together, this life, and you never get done paying your dues, for as long as we all shall live.

Today’s tune is from Jason Eady. He has neo-classic pipes, All-American good looks, and an amazing facility for songwriting. He has just come off a West Coast run opening for Cody Canada & The Departed. Boy oh boy, I’ll bet that they had a great time. Jason came to visit us during our sessions at The MusicFest in Steamboat Springs, from our makeshift studio in The Steamboat Grand. He played us some brand new tunes, this being one of them. “Paying My Dues,” is a co-write with Micky Braun, and you can expect it to be on Jason’s forthcoming CD AM Country Heaven, which we hear now has a release date of January, 2012. Meanwhile, Music Fog brings you our version of it. Always paying our dues.
